They&#8217;re satisfyingly simple to create, not too precious, and plain fun. As a young adult they were a window into other worlds, and an influencing factor to my ending up a designer. I&#8217;ve been making them for my entire adult life \u2014\u00a0as glorified newsletters, self-promotional mailers, art, and to collaborate.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150922_130616-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Matt Cassity Zines\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some zines I&#8217;ve made.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few months ago, I sent a zine to all my pals w\/ kids. Cool little coloring zines for cool little people. Subscribe and you\u2019ll get a new coloring book every month.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Goals:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Find 1000 subscribers interested in: zines, obsessive drawing, exposing kids to art, off-line activities, and finding something delightful in the mailbox<\/li>\n<li>Make the process easy and beneficial to the artists \u2014\u00a0everyone will be compensated for their work, and the process is hassle-free with creative control in their hands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I was lucky to get the terrific illustrator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/jimtheillustrator\/\">Jim Stoten<\/a> to do the first issue. We met a year or so ago, and he\u2019s super nice. His zines are always really funny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150922_125942-1024x699.jpg\" alt=\"hit Book\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/hitbook.wordpress.com\/\">Hit Book<\/a> was a zine-making party organized by <a href=\"http:\/\/kellyrakowski.us\/\">Kelly Rakowski<\/a> and myself. A bunch of friends would get together and we\u2019d spend an afternoon creating a zine on a single topic using stacks of old clip art books and making drawings. I love looking at the evidence of how much fun it was.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150922_130345-1024x587.jpg\" alt=\"Wayne White Zines\" \/>After designing his <a href=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/index.html#wayne-white\">book<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/waynewhiteart.com\/\">Wayne White<\/a> surprised us with a package of his early homemade comic booklets. They\u2019re each a little treasure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150922_125809-1024x632.jpg\" alt=\"Cheetahs Never Win\" \/>I met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motmotshop.com\/\">Steve Reeder<\/a> at a graphic design conference in 2002 and we\u2019ve somehow kept in touch ever since (thanks internet).
