I emailed straight away and was stoked to hear they were gearing up to prepare a sample for publishers. We had a skype call about a month later\u00a0to get started.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oct 2013<\/strong> \u2014\u00a0Met with Zach, and discovered we had similar references in mind for the size, shape, and spirit of the book. A few days later, I made a trip to the mini-village \/ commune \/ handmade utopia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaverbrook.com\/\">Beaver Brook<\/a>. A\u00a0crew of people were diligently working on the sauna. I helped by repairing the mailbox that I\u2019d run over when I arrived\u00a0&#x1f610;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Initial Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An object \u2014\u00a0a \u201cbrick\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Size \/ tactile references: field guides, how-to books<\/li>\n<li>Photos are the star of the book. Sacred, lush, presented as big as possible \u2026 it is\u00a0<em>pornography<\/em> after all<\/li>\n<li>Not contemporary or \u2018now\u2019 feeling \u2026 no trends or of-the-moment typography (side note: a lot of architecture\u00a0books are designed by architects, and it shows!)<\/li>\n<li>Typographic cues from manuals, how-to, back-to-the land books of the 60s &amp; 70s, however nothing \u2018retro\u2019 or obvious<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nov &amp; Dec 2013<\/strong> \u2014 We worked on a proposal. I started gathering typographic samples and inspiration:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1540\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-type-ref-matt-cassity.jpg\" alt=\"Cabin Porn Typographic Inspiration\" width=\"700\" height=\"2330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-type-ref-matt-cassity.jpg 700w, http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-type-ref-matt-cassity-90x300.jpg 90w, http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-type-ref-matt-cassity-308x1024.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>&#8230; many of the references used chunky serifs created during the Arts &amp; Crafts movement. I liked them, but didn&#8217;t want to mimic them exactly, only nod to\u00a0their tone.<\/p>\n<p>I put together sample palettes of headlines, subheads, body copy, page numbers, etc:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1541\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-typography-matt-cassity.gif\" alt=\"cabin porn typography\" width=\"562\" height=\"2913\" \/>An\u00a0Intro to Typography rule is to stick with one or two type families. I break that rule and mix a lot of similar looking type\u00a0to create\u00a0texture,\u00a0flavor, and mystery. I get bummed out when I can recognize the principle typefaces in someone\u2019s work. It&#8217;s boring.\u00a0This book has over ten different type families and remains cohesive. Keep \u2019em guessing!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Throughout 2014<\/strong>\u00a0the rest of the team\u00a0traveled all over the country capturing the feature stories.\u00a0Often\u00a0projects\u00a0have a tight schedule\u00a0and\u00a0there is little time to explore variations. I was excited to spend time and create a lot of different layouts. With each version, I\u2019d tweak the size, margins, typography, and grid:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1544\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-layouts-matt-cassity.jpg\" alt=\"cabin-porn-layouts-matt-cassity\" width=\"700\" height=\"3883\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-layouts-matt-cassity.jpg 700w, http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-layouts-matt-cassity-54x300.jpg 54w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>\u00a0&#8230; I&#8217;d print these out to see how they conform to the many factors that make a pleasing layout\u00a0\u2014 is there room for your thumbs, is the body copy readable, are the columns a comfortable length, are the headlines in proportion, do the photos lay in with minimal cropping?<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there\u2019s a bit of planning needed to figure out the page count and how the pace of the book will flow. If you get something circulating as a<em> For Placement Only<\/em> cover, it often ends up as the <em>Real<\/em> cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">From the very beginning\u00a0 I had a specific cover idea in mind, but for the sake of exhausting options I put it aside and made about 100 layouts:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1549\" src=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-cover-matt-cassity.jpg\" alt=\"Cabin Porn Cover\" width=\"605\" height=\"2439\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-cover-matt-cassity.jpg 605w, http:\/\/mattcassity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cabin-porn-cover-matt-cassity-254x1024.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/>\u00a0&#8230;we tried all kinds of title orientations, stickers, and dust covers,\u00a0and as you can guess; we ended up with the original idea for the cover \u2014 \u00a0wordless, lush, full bleed image on the hardcover with a discreet \u2018wrapper\u2019 bellyband covering up the sexy cabin. After that there was the usual housekeeping and tying up of loose ends. I\u2019ve left out all the workflow and mechanical bits out of this post-mortem to spare you the tedium!<\/p>\n<p>As a designer, it is often hard to look at a big book once it is printed because you spent so much time poring over every page, and you don\u2019t want to find a mistake, and you may still cringe at some small compromise.
