Had a real long weekend. Due to our proximity to the WTC site, we didn’t come in on Thurs and Fri. Wed night I met up and had dinner with Carolyn and then dragged her to see Mercury Rev at the Stone. We had no idea what we were signed up for. Lots of ambient sounds and generated random noise. We were held captive, but not nearly captivated. I was pretty worried when the lead singer put on a pair of disco ball antenna on his head. Anyhow, there was no actual what squares call “songs” — so I was a bit disappointed and felt duped. But it has provided all kinds of fodder for jokes and conversation since. So that’s that.

Hung out with Mike all day Thurs. He’d just returned from Chinatown. And as it goes when you’re traveling and not working and just letting your brain go, he had a lot of thoughts to share with me. And lots of info on what goes down over there in China. It seems to be true that they can make anything and can do so cheaply, thanks to people’s willingness to accept low wages. Nice of them. Anyhow we ate pizza, tacos and beer that night.

Fri it rained all damn day. I listened to Led Zepplin, and later went out with Jen to see Suckers. It was ok. A real nice venue and it’s kind of hard to rock out when the air conditioning is on full blast and beers are expensive.

Sat I met up with Carolyn and we met up with Nato and MIranda at the Anarchist Ice Cream truck, which seemed to be a hit. Pretty perfect propaganda distribution weather that day. We left them and I hope they found some shade to soak in. Headed all they way up to Long Isl City to see the boats made from pretty trash and big Swoon installation up there. Pretty cool stuff. The boats looked really cool docked up with the Queensboro bridge covered in tarps. Totally looked like a Kevin Costner movie, man. This fellow called Chicken John gave us a pretty detailed lecture on gasification, which is essentially how to hook a smoker up to an engine and run it off of acorns (which he pronounced eggcorns) and wood scraps. Cool concept, but I don’t have any engines I need to run. Then we went to see the new Woody Allen movie. The theater was totally full as it was a cloudy Saturday. Whole bunch of New Yorkers watching a Woody Allen movie — everyone loved it!

Sun night I met up with Jennette, Dan and Mike for some jalepeno poppers and tv, the had some dinner at this semi-akward restaurant. I walked home and popped into the local Jazz cafe for a listen. I like that place.

Straight after work yesterday I went to see a performance of the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. There was all kinds of art people hanging around. Then met up with Jeff for dinner under the moonlight with a bottle of wine. Meandered home and ran into various peoples.

I’m not too concerned about the economy.
I am concerned with the mainstream media.
I wonder when a good time to visit San Francisco is?
Is $250 for an 8 session class a good idea when the motivation is just to take a class?

  1. A: Yes. Pay the $250 and take a class. You’ll be less of a sucker than me. I’m paying $340 for a 6 session class with two motivations. One is just to take a class. The second is to learn how to sew. This works out to $56 per class, but if you continue to break it down it comes to just $14 per hour per motivation (all materials included). I wouldn’t pay that if I didn’t live in NYC, but sometimes you have to jump in.

  2. i think you should skip the class. instead, i think you should give yourself a set of restrictions. i.e. everyday come home and work on 1 thing that you are not interested in for 30 minutes. no distractions. no alcohol, no music, no hanky panky. just working on workin. then, follow that immediately with 15 minutes of something you love to do. repeat for 1 week and see how you feel.
